Thoughts on other venues, and interlinking

I wonder how feasible it is to add additional venues (beyond the mailing-lists) into the places where certain types of notification are distributed? I grok this would add more effort on the team's part, but it could perhaps save effort for folks looking elsewhere.

Or, these notes might just provide more places to mention / link-to / emphasize the existing primary venue (cloud-announce).

I.e. Bovlb suggested that they initially looked for information:

  1. "on affected projects" -- I'm not sure if this means: (A) on a production wiki (probably. Perhaps in Tech News?), or (B) within the tools themselves (is there a way to inject announcement-banners into all tools?! I assume not.)
  2. "the toolforge Wiki" -- Perhaps it would be worth adding entries for things like this into News?
    • Sidenote: and perhaps News should get a copy of {{:Help:Cloud Services communication}} at the bottom?
  3. "in the MOTD" -- I'm not sure what this MessageOfTheDay refers to. Probably a terminal-login message, but IANAD, so I don't know what it looks like normally, or if/how often it gets updated (if very rarely, then banner-blindness might make it useless beyond a newcomer audience.)

Two additional ideas:

Thanks for this comment! I personally like the idea of using the News page more, both for announcing scheduled maintenance and for informing of unexpected outages/incidents. A related discussion is phab:T95922, though that might be an instance of xkcd: standards :) FNegri (talk) 11:11, 26 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
